The sizing for M-43 Service Boots was updated in 2023. The fit and last are unchanged, but the sizing has just been shifted up by 0.5 size, to align more consistently with the rest of the Lofgren catalog. Put simply, what was previously called a size 9.5 is now called a size 10. The original M-43 service shoe that serves as the model for these was issued in 1943, with the rivetless version starting in 1944. The basic specifications for this boot were very simple. Composition sole, welted construction, natural combination-tanned rough-out cowhide, all built up on the Munson last with an unstructured toe. The goal was to have a cost-effective, durable shoe for all forms of combat conditions. Multiple variants popped up across the armed forces, including version for the Marines and the Navy, all with the same basic template.

Chromexcel cowhide an extremely sturdy and handsome leather that only gets better and better with time. These are made from full grain natural CXL roughout - the reverse (or "suede") side of the usual CXL cowhide. Like the smooth finish, the roughout is an extremely dynamic leather that's been finished without any sort of dye applied. The light tan roughout patinas quickly and dramatically, wearing down in some areas, and taking on color from light, moisture, and whatever you may end up walking through. Individual panels across the boots may begin as different hues of brown or tan, and will settle into a more uniform color with time and wear.

As far as leather goes, it's thick and sturdy, starting out noticeably stiff and requiring a few weeks of good wear to really break-in. After that, the leather begins to relax considerably, moulding to take the shape of the wearer's foot and softening at flex points to move more easily.

John Lofgren set out to make the ultimate version of this boot from the very best components - from Mil-spec eyelets and speed hooks to the USA-made Vibram 705 soles and 700 heel. It's finished with a 360 degree Goodyear storm welt that can be rebuilt after wear by any trusted cobbler.

They are built around the same Munson last as used in the originals, which makes for a comfortable, supportive boot.
